Will the Real America Stand Up

I opened the small pouch. In it contained a scalpel, medical items, tourniquet, band aids, wrappings, pills, and assorted items. These were last used in World War II, in the south pacific. They belonged to my dad, who now in his mid eighties, remembers his role as a medic in WWII. He had gone to the board as his draft number was coming up. Having just graduated from High school, his next stop was according to Uncle Sam, in boot camp, the army to be specific. But as it turned out, he enlisted just before being drafted.
I remember him telling me why he became a medic, his answer was simple. They asked me what I wanted to do. I told them, “I just don’t want to kill anyoneâ€. “Then you can be a medic and save lives†the officer told him. With that, my dad, a fresh graduate from Avalon High School on Catalina Island went to war.
The chilling parts of the war were never replayed by Dad. It seemed he had enough of it in the War itself. When the war was over, he came to the Midwest, Wyoming to be exact. There he met a farm girl and married her. He was married to her for 52 years till she died. Today you can find him at the senior center visiting with others his age. His mind is clear; he has minor diabetes, and has a bum ankle which hurts to walk on. But in all this, he is doing very well.
He is just a few of the remaining veterans left alive from World War II. The great war, as if there was one that fit this category. The war where suicide pilots, all Japanese, who devoted their lives to the emperor, vowed to lose their lives in combat. Dad was grateful of one thing. Politics was out, simply put, “I was glad they dropped the bombâ€. Without that bomb we would have invaded Japan. Casualties would have been horrendous. Some estimates of one million or more. No matter how you count it, the war took too many lives and brought America to the understanding that people want to destroy us.
Today we face the same dilemma. People want to destroy us. Even our own political leaders seem inept at protecting our borders, our foods, and our lifestyles. We face suicide bombers, a war that is undeclared, and many young soldiers who have died from this action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now the Bush administration after invading these two sovereign nations, are bent on invading another one, this time Iran. Oh, yes we have the reasons. The political machinery seems all too quick to tell you why. But the fact is, this is not WWII. We were not attacked as Pearl Harbor, nor do we have Hitler invading sovereign nations. We do have terrorists and terrorism. We have an undeclared war, started by a President who did not get a full congressional approval. This action in Iraq was not declared by the congress as a war as it was in WWII. Yet we seem to wave the flag and want to hurry off to invade or destroy another nation.
In the middle ages, the king and his guard went to war with all the males in the kingdom. The king led the pack in the war machinery then. The political pundits in the middle ages would be seeing the king in action, on the front lines, busy winning the war. Our leaders today sit in comfy rooms in the city of confusion called Washington DC. From there the call to war is made. Right now as you prepare for Christmas and other holidays, our leaders are looking at sending more young people to die in a war undeclared.
You might say we needed to invade Iraq and Afghanistan, but I say we did not. You might see the need to bomb the daylight out of Iran, but I do not. You say they will have nuclear weapons, will so does Pakistan, India, China, Russia, N Korea, Israel, Great Britain and many others. Will we bomb all of them? There are Muslim radicals in all those nations. All of them want us dead. All of them would use nuke’s against us.
The War mentality of the Bush administration is surely wreaking havoc on the nations. Russia’s Putin sees himself as the one to stop such aggressive nations today.
Recently Putin was quoted in Reuters saying:
“There are those who would like to build a unipolar world, who would themselves like to rule all of humanity,” Putin said, a phrase he has used over the past seven years of his administration to mean the United States.
“Some minor countries, under pressure from larger ones, are having a hard time figuring out how to defend their own interests. And Russia has played and will continue to play a positive, stabilizing role in the world,” he said.
How long will Russia and China stand back while the United States invades so many sovereign nations? Will the next time we invade such a nation be the time we face Russian or Chinese troops as well? The clock is running out for the United States to be doing such things. The Bush Administration sees itself as the one to bring down all the tyrannical forces in the world, even at the expense of your children. How much is your child worth today, say one Iraqi life, one Afghani, or an invasion of Iran? Do you really think that your life can go on enjoying the fruits this country has to offer and still make war on everyone that we don’t agree with.
There is no doubt there are forces in the world who want to destroy all we are. But then, there always have been such people. Today we cannot secure our borders. Aliens travel over our borders like a leaky fish net. Mexicans openly demonstrate on our streets declaring a Mexican state made up of California, New Mexico, and Texas. I look at the many voices in our nation. Many want their own way. Today we see Patriotism thrown out the window and being an American a thing of the past. Today, many who come to this nation want to bring their own ideas to it. Gone are the days when people came to this country to be an American. Moreover, they did so, giving up all things and clinging to the ideas and freedoms which made us so great, by Gods blessings. The same nation my dad fought for during WWII is gone now. He doesn’t recognize it anymore. Where is America? The nation we call America is gone, violated by greedy men. But America still lives on in the hearts of many who know the real America, an America of the people, by the people, and for the people. For this ideal, many will die to protect our nation from those within this country, who want to destroy its sovereignty and idealism. They have almost succeeded in this goal, but I ask you today, will you stand up for the Real America?
