Francis Nicholson, the colonial governor of Maryland named it “Anne’s City†after the apparently to be heir to the crown. It was originally settled by Virginia Puritans in 1649, but today it is the site of the new peace initiative pushed by the Bush administration. When the Declaration of Independence was signed, four of the signers were from Maryland and three lived in Annapolis in 1776. The city is on stage this week with the highlights being broadcast worldwide. The city was the first peacetime capital in the USA. During the civil war, the city was divided as to loyalties, with feelings for both the North and the South running high. So today, it is again a city that will bring many feelings to the table with the Bush administration vying for a place in the history books. Howbeit, history may say of Bush, “He led the way for the destruction of the USA!â€
There are many today that see this effort led by Bush as the first step in the dismantling of Israel. The trouble for Israel is, her leaders are inept to stop this effort. The question today is why do Israel’s leaders seem to bend over backward so she can be destroyed?
Yitzchak Rabin, who was Israel’s P.M., and was murdered for efforts to bring Israel some peace, gave speech days before he was assassinated. Below is an excerpt from that speech heard in the Knesset. This excerpt reminds us what was really said and builds a picture of what Israel should be standing on.
“Here, in the land of Israel, we returned and built a nation. Here, in the land of Israel, we established a state. The land of the prophets, which bequeathed to the world the values of morality, law and justice, was, after two thousand years, restored to its lawful owners - the members of the Jewish people. On its land, we have built an exceptional national home and state.
“We view the permanent solution in the framework of State of Israel which will include most of the area of the Land of Israel as it was under the rule of the British Mandate, and alongside it a Palestinian entity which will be a home to most of the Palestinian residents living in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
We will not return to the 4 June 1967 lines. First and foremost, united Jerusalem … as the capital of Israel, under Israeli sovereignty.
“The security border of the State of Israel will be located in the Jordan Valley … The establishment of blocs of settlements in Judea and Samaria, like the one in Gush Katif.
“We had to choose between the whole of the land of Israel … and a state with less territory, but which would be a Jewish state. We chose to be a Jewish state.
“… the primary obstacle today, to implementing the peace process between us and the Palestinians, is the murderous terrorism of the radical Islamic terrorist organizations…
“… we … committed ourselves before the Knesset, not to uproot a single settlement in the framework of the interim agreement, and not to hinder building for natural growth.
“We are aware of the fact that the Palestinian Authority has not - up until now - [and never thereafter E.H.] honored its commitment to change the Palestinian Covenant, and that all of the promises on this matter have not been kept. I would like to bring it to the attention of the members of the house that I view these changes as a supreme test of the Palestinian Authority’s willingness and ability, and the changes required will be an important and serious touchstone vis-à -vis the continued implementation of the agreement as a whole.â€
Today as Olmert goes to Annapolis, so do Arab leaders from around the tiny state of Israel. The leaders who are coming want more from Israel. They, in fact, want Bush to make Israel accept the Arab Peace initiative. This initiative would deliver Jerusalem to the Palestinians, the west bank, and of course Gaza already is theirs, plus moves Israel’s borders back to their original lines. In addition, Syria wants Golan back, and the Bush administration would like nothing more than have Israel cave in to the pressure.
Many who are watching this say the leaders who are coming, are actually weak. That this meeting is just one of many more such meetings and is the carrot before the stick approach. This American push is one way to get Arab support for its own multi-national aggression in Iraq, Afghanistan, and eventually in Iran. If America can push Israel to accept this new peace agreement, then when the Bush administration goes into Iran, or bombs the daylight out of it, then the Arabs will be more likely to go silently into the night.
The Israeli project has released information on the past historical nature of the Arab and Israeli peace processes.
The government’s good faith efforts have included releasing 783 Palestinian prisoners this year [1] as well as granting amnesty to 178 wanted terrorists. [2] Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also promised that Israel would not build any new settlements in the West Bank and dismantle illegal outposts, in line with the country’s commitments described in the first stage of the Road Map. [3]
Further, the results of Israel’s efforts towards peace have resulted in many disappointing events. Most of which are not at all conducive towards peace. The Israeli Project has listed the following:
· 1,839 Qassam rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli towns
· 112 tons of explosives have been smuggled into Gaza since 2005
· 150 rocket-propelled grenade launchers were smuggled into Gaza during the month of August alone.
· 2,586 rockets and mortar bombs have been fired from Gaza at Israeli communities since Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza in August 2005.
· In 2007, 1,839 Qassam rockets and mortar bombs have been launched at Israeli civilians. On average, that amounts to 1 rocket every 4 hours for the past 11 months.
· Since January 2001, 7,191 rockets and mortar bombs have been fired at Israeli civilians.
· Since Hamas seized control of the Gaza strip in June 2007, more than 809 Qassam rockets and mortars have been fired at Israeli towns in the western Negev region.
· Before Hamas took over, there was an average of 48 rockets and mortars fired every month from Gaza. Since Hamas took over the average has skyrocketed to 233 per month.
· During September and October 2007, 68 percent of all Qassam and mortar strikes were launched from Beit Hanoun.
· 14 percent of all Qassam and mortar launches came from Beit Lahiya and 8 percent came from the Jabaliya refugee camp, at the northern end of Gaza.
· 10 people have been killed by rocket fire, including a 2-year old baby, Dorit Inso, and two 4-year olds, Yuval Abebah and Afik Zahavi.
· The IDF and Israeli security forces have prevented 39 suicide bombings in 2007. 22 of those originated in Gaza and 17 in the West Bank
· In 2007 so far, there have been 492 attacks on IDF soldiers in the West Bank. Of those, there were 340 incidents of small arms fire, 112 incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and 32 knife attacks.
· In 2007, 60 Israeli civilians have been injured by rocket and mortar fire and 2 people killed.
· Over 140 people have been physically wounded by the missile fire in Sderot alone.
· In Nov. 2006, it was found that 33 percent of children in Sderot suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
· More than 200 families (about 1,200 people) have fled Sderot due to the ongoing shelling from Gaza by Palestinian terrorists. [The Israel Project, press release newsletter, Nov 21, 2007]
The above is just a partial listing of the strife and struggle everyday Israelis face. How can a people have peace with those who want them dead? These do not want peace or co-existence; they want Israel removed and all Jews dead. There is no evidence to support the idea that any peace proposal would bring a long lasting substantiative peace to both sides.
Moreover, if the Bush administration continues to push Israel into a corner and the weak Israeli leaders cave in, then the results would be catastrophic. For Israel, the nation and society they know today would be destroyed. For America, judgment would be headed towards our nation for this maneuvering of Israel into the vipers den. For Bush, he will go down in history as the chief Architect of the demise of Israel. History has proven that the Palestinians do not follow or approve of agreements with Israel. History has shown that time and again innocent Israelis are killed by fanatic Muslims who seem hell bent on destroying Jews. For America to pursue this course and push Israel, is tantamount to our own suicide. If you believe that the L-rd G-d would allow Israel to be destroyed by our ignorant maneuverings, then you need to think again. Whatever course eventually follows the Annapolis summit, you can count on this, the L-rd G-d is watching. He will have the last word, and surely will let the nations know his judgment on the matter.
Psalms 22:28 Â For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.
Joel 3:2 Â I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
To Israel let it be said, “be careful what agreements you makeâ€. To America, let the warning go forth, “your own pride and foolishness will destroy youâ€. If Americans think they can enjoy their lifestyle and comfort, while as the same time see Israel destroyed by our leaders pride and foolishness, then we surely are foolish and do walk in a fool’s paradise.
Proverbs 26:5 Â Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
