Progressive Inflammatory Neuropathy

Calling it “Progressive inflammatory neuropathy”, the CDC issued a release concerning this new condition that many likened to HIV when it was first discovered. This was first discovered among workers at a Quality Pork Processors in Austin, MN.
The workers were affected when they apparently were at the ‘head table’. This is located in the processing plants where the meat is carved off the back of hog heads for use in cold cuts, hot dogs, and where products like brains, snouts, and ears are harvested.

According to the Post Bulletin, there were 17 people affected with more at other plants around the nation. In interviews of some of those affected, the symptoms were extreme.

“I got to the point where my son would put my walker in front of me, and he’d hold down on the walker so I could use that to pull myself out of the chair,” said Susan Kruse, the only victim to go public so far.
Most continue to work — some, despite seemingly insurmountable physical limitations, said health and industry officials.
Although steroid and other treatments have helped, the term “recovered” can’t be used because they continue to experience the effects of spine and nerve inflammation.
Several people diagnosed locally with PIN said their symptoms were so severe that they awoke unable to move; had to use wheelchairs; or lost sensation in their arms, legs, feet or hands. Others had loss of feeling, tingling, pain and numbness in their lower extremities.
Seventeen people — men and women of several races — were sickened nationwide at three slaughterhouses: QPP, Indiana Packers Corp in Delphi, Ind.; and the Hormel plant in Fremont, Neb. [postbulletin.com/newsmanager/templates/localnews_story.asp?a=335209&z=28]

Investigation of Progressive Inflammatory Neuropathy Among Swine Slaughterhouse Workers — Minnesota, 2007—2008

On October 29, 2007, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) was notified by a tertiary-care provider of unexplained neurologic illnesses among workers in a swine slaughterhouse (plant A) in southeast Minnesota. As a result, MDH initiated a detailed investigation at plant A to characterize the outbreak. This report describes the ongoing investigation and outbreak-control measures undertaken by state public health officials and CDC.

Plant A, located in southeastern Minnesota, employs approximately 1,200 workers and processes 18,000 pigs per day. After being notified of the illnesses, MDH investigators initiated active case finding, interviewed workers at plant A, and reviewed the plant’s occupational health and employment records. As of January 28, 2008, a total of 12 workers at plant A had been identified with confirmed (eight workers), probable (two), or possible (two) progressive inflammatory neuropathy (PIN) (Box). Illness onset ranged from November 2006 through November 2007. Median age of the 12 patients was 31 years (range: 21–51 years); six patients were female. All 12 patients reported being healthy before the onset of neurologic symptoms.

Symptoms ranged from acute paralysis to gradually progressive symmetric weakness over periods ranging from 8 to 213 days. Severity ranged from minor weakness and numbness to paralysis predominantly in the lower extremities affecting mobility. Eleven patients had evidence of axonal or demyelinating peripheral neuropathy by electrodiagnostic testing. Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained from seven patients. All seven had elevated protein levels (median: 125 mg/dL; range: 75–231 mg/dL [normal: 14--45 mg/dL]) with no or minimal pleocytosis (median: 1 cell/dL; range: 1–73 cells/dL in a nontraumatic tap); five patients had evidence of inflammation on spinal magnetic resonance imaging (four patients in peripheral nerves or roots and one patient in the anterior spinal cord).

All 12 patients reported either working at or having regular contact with an area where swine heads were processed (known as the head table), which was located within a larger processing area in plant A known as the warm room. A case-control study was conducted among plant A workers to identify specific risk factors associated with illness. The 10 patients with confirmed or probable cases were included in the study, along with two stratified control groups: 1) a random selection of 48 healthy warm-room workers and 2) all 65 healthy head-table workers. Statistically significant (p<0.05) differences were calculated by chi-square test. Blood samples and throat swabs were collected from all consenting case-patients and controls. As of January 30, laboratory investigations had not identified any infectious agent from the blood and throat-swab specimens that would explain the occurrence of PIN.

Results of the case-control study indicated that case-patients (seven of 10, 70%) were significantly more likely to have worked at the head table than the warm-room controls (12 of 48, 25%) (odds ratio [OR]: 7.0; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.3--42.2; p = 0.009). Case-patients also were more likely to have removed brains or remaining skeletal muscle from the pig head (a process known as backing heads) (four of 10, 40%) than controls (two of 46, 4%) (OR: 15.3; CI = 1.8--163.4; p = 0.006). Among head-table workers, case-patients were significantly more likely to have removed brains or skeletal muscle from the head (four of seven, 57%) than head-table controls (eight of 65, 12%) (OR: 9.50; CI = 1.40--70.2; p = 0.01). Illness was not determined to be associated with previous travel outside or within the United States; exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, or insecticides; use of medications; or receipt of previous vaccinations.

An environmental assessment of the plant was conducted on November 28, 2007. Standard personal protective equipment (PPE) used by workers at plant A included hard hats, laboratory coats (including some that were short-sleeved), boots, hearing protection, eye protection, and specialized gloves that varied with the particular task of the worker. A compressed air device was used in the plant to harvest brain tissue from pig heads at the head table. The device was placed into the skull of the pig through the foramen magnum, and the force of the air disrupted the brain material into a liquefied form that made it easier to remove (a technique known as "blowing brains"). This technique caused generation of small droplets and splatter, possibly including aerosolized brain material, to which workers operating the device and others nearby might have been exposed. In response to the investigation, plant A voluntarily suspended harvesting of brains and instituted additional mandatory PPE on November 28, 2007, including face shields and long sleeves, for workers stationed at the head table and other workers who chose to use additional PPE.

Results of Case-Finding Survey

A survey of the 25 federally inspected swine slaughterhouses with >500 employees in the United States indicated that only three plants (plant A in Minnesota and plants in Nebraska and Indiana) reported recent use of compressed air to extract pig brains. To date, no cases of PIN have been identified in association with workers at the Nebraska plant. However, several workers at the Indiana plant have been preliminarily identified with neurologic illnesses and similar histories of exposure to head-processing activities at that slaughterhouse. Further assessments of these patients, and additional measures to identify other workers with illness, are being conducted in Indiana. As a result of this investigation, all three plants have stopped using compressed air to extract brain material.

In recent developments, The Bush administration seems to be preparing for an assault on Iran. That is according to the latest military data from Russian Military Intelligence. The report was cited on the Russian news and Information agency news sites, one of the most authoritative and professional sources of prompt information in Russia and abroad, that is according to their own website. The RIA Novosti has a correspondent network in the Russian Federation, CIS and over 40 non CIS countries. It reported that:

The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran,’ the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.
He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran ‘that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost.’
He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. [en.rian.ru/russia/20070327/62697703.html]

There have been intelligence sources that have chosen to remain anonymous that have told us of intrusions into the Republic of Iran by American forces, under secretive and coded actions. The intrusions usually are of a group of Special Forces that enter into a country for covert and action intelligence purposes, which are a precursor to major military operations.
As the information seems to be coming to the surface from various areas, there is still no substantial proof as to the Bush administrations true intentions on Iran. For some reason, known only to the Bush administration, the War Powers acts, and Congressional approval for war seems to be ignored. The course of war has been an ongoing discussion among those watching the international scene. Many have taken the recent intelligence reports from various sources as to point to a strike within Iran. The strike is seen as one of major ‘nuclear and deep ground penetrating arms’ meant to destroy the capabilities of Iran. Because of anti- Israel and American threats, the Bush administration has consistently taken the viewpoint of Iran being a threat to peace in the region. The Russian viewpoint on the issue has been also seen as seeing such an American move on Iran as threatening. The resulting attack could usher in a major War with both Iran and Russia.
This last week Vice President Dick Cheney made the round to the Arab allies of the United States. According to the Iranian International news network, Press TV, the popular government guided Saudi newspaper Okaz reported that the “Saudi Shura council approved of a nuclear fallout preparation plans.” This occurred only a day after the US vice president visited the Saudi’s. Visits of the Vice President also included a meeting with King Abdullah as well. As a result of the Shura ruling, the Saudi government will start the implementation of:

“National plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the Kingdom following expert warnings of possible attacks on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactors”. [presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=49572&sectionid=351020104]

There have been deployments to the region for some time, ever increasing in size and scope according to sources. Many speculate that the Pentagon has the estimated numbers of potential dead in Iran as well, which could number in the millions. In addition, only precautions of a potential high level radiation could prompt such an action by the Saudi’s in regard to nuclear fallout. The question remains open and needs an answer, hopefully before the ‘nuc’ is dropped. That question is of course, “what do the Saudis now know that the American Public is not being made aware of?” Why is the Bush machine so intent on this action? The answer may be in Bush’s own words “I am a War President”. The last question is, will America survive past this mans idea’s to make war with another nation and send even more young men and women to their graves for the agenda of the New World war lords Order. This is the Angel in the Whirlwind and the chaos he brings in is only starting.

The ‘Gay’ Exception and the Gospel Misunderstood

Leave it to Jeremy Hooper, the indefatigable, youthful Homosexuality Apologist over at the “Good as You” blog, to misconstrue our Easter presentation of the Gospel, “Was Jesus Powerless?” Hooper, who comments on AFTAH’s website and those of other conservative groups with amazing alacrity, is irritated by my comparison of practicing homosexual sinners with other sinners covered by God’s grace.

Pegging off my non-comprehensive list of people who offend God but find forgiveness and hope in Jesus Christ, Hooper writes (bold and “shouting” (caps) emphasis is his):

So let’s see here – we homosexuals are compared to those (of any orientation or gender) who abuse substances, make wagers, objectify women, talk [sh*t] about others, force sex upon someone against their will, take a life, sell their bodies, sell other people’s bodies, patronize those who sell their bodies, take on a job in which they are motivated by profit, run for and carry out office in an unethical way, base their worldview in a mindset that’s detached from religious rule, don’t feel themselves bound by conventional wisdom, utilize their freedom to terminate a pregnancy (either through their medical practice or personal body decisions), have faith in science rather than God, are egocentric assholes, spread untruths, and/or cheat on their committed partners. Weird, because all this time we’ve viewed our always-present biological desires more like, say – THE ALWAYS-PRESENT BIOLOGICAL DESIRES OF OUR HETEROSEXUAL FRIENDS!

Who knew that when we were taught proper comparison techniques way back when, the idea of noting similarity between two or more things came with the caveat: “EXCEPT WHEN DEALING WITH SEXUAL ATTRACTION”? Clearly our kindergarten teacher was nothing more than an atheistic libertine!

What Jeremy doesn’t understand is that just because he feels that his homosexuality is some innate “orientation” – a natural, innocuous desire – that does not make it true. The Bible – regarded by Christi-followers throughout the centuries as the divinely-inspired Word of God – takes a view that is polar opposite that of today’s homosexual advocates. Let’s return to that “obscure” New Testament book, Romans, for some guidance:

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. (Romans 1:24-27)

“Clobber Verses”?

The above is just one of the so-called (“anti-gay”) “Clobber Verses” loathed and ridiculed by homosexual activists because they, well, clobber their sin. Many committed homosexuals come to resent or even despise Christianity because it so clearly condemns their favorite sin. Others seek to redefine the faith to get around those offensive passages, but you would have to apply Bill-Clinton-esque semantics (on steroids) to come away with an interpretation of the Bible that does not proscribe homosexual practice. (See Professor Rob Gagnon for more Biblical scholarship on this point.)

There is no singling out the poor homosexuals here: advocates of special treatment for other sins would have to undergo the same semantic gymnastics to gain approval for their errant behavior(s) and attitude(s) of choice. (Strange how you never hear people complain about the “clobber verses” against adulterers? That’s because, despite the abundance of philandering in our decaying culture, there is no hugely-funded, organized National Adultery Task Force to defend that sin.)

The Bible is an equal opportunity offender, and Jesus only tightened the standards of holiness (e.g., Matthew 5:27-29), while also making God’s grace much more accessible to everyday people – that is, sinners like you and me. The older I get, the more I realize that I simply cannot be “good,” in a godly, Biblical sense, without Christ. He is my goodness. I’m pretty rotten inside without Him. That’s not false humility but a cold (hearted) reality.

Anyway, if you believe the Bible, God does not give homosexual-practicing sinners a pass because homosexuality is a some “always-present biological desire” (a thesis which is not supported by facts or science, although you’d never know it by the frequent assertions to the contrary by Jeremy and fellow homosexual activists). In fact, one thing we humans have in common is that each of us struggles with something that truly was “always present” in our lives – sin.

No, Jeremy, you weren’t “born gay,” but you were born a sinner. Join the club. It’s got billions of members.

If you don’t believe in the “natural” depravity of mankind, try watching young children at a playground, or siblings at home: nobody taught them to be selfish, envious, greedy, disobedient, etc. That’s just how they are – why, I wonder, if people are naturally “good” as so many believe these days?

So my answer to you, Jeremy, is that the vices against which I struggle – envy, pride, lust, greed, selfishness, lack of love and grace, and more – seem to have been “always present” in my life – at least that’s something I realized when I came to Christ after college and saw myself as I really was. Could it be that the deceitful heart that the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah describes (Jeremiah 17:9) describes your heart and that you could be wrong, and God could be right, concerning what you believe to be your natural “orientation”? (By the way, in a future essay we must address how the Christian Church, like everyone else, spends way, way too much time and effort discussing, debating and pondering the “cause” of homosexuality – further proof that many erroneously regard this as a “special sin” that is not really a sin.)

‘Gay’ Fundamentalism

Perhaps it was destined to be that much of the debate over homosexuality in our culture would come down to a religious or philosophical discussion. Savvy homosexual activists well understand the power of religion in American life and increasingly frame their arguments using morality language borrowed from the Church.

We have our absolutes, Biblically grounded, and the “Gay Fundamentalists” have theirs. I use that term because honest homosexuality advocates (“gay” and straight) will admit that they have their own set of non-negotiables — “articles of faith,” as it were. Perhaps their paramount tenet (fundamental) is that homosexuals have no “choice” over their “sexual orientation” – therefore there is nothing to be guilty about! (To be fair, some homosexual activists reject the “born gay” artifice and/or admit that they chose to embrace homosexuality.)

Rationalization takes two main forms on the “gay” side: Religious Homosexual Fundamentalists create a “gay-positive” “christianity” – preposterous as that is, historically speaking – while Secular Gay Fundamentalists reject Christianity and assert a new metaphysical reality based on their homosexual “condition.” Both camps say their new doctrines are superior to and more up-to-date than historic Christian teachings on sex and marriage.

Despite all this, we committed Christians, we traditionalists, offer our most politically incorrect solution to mankind’s predicament: that people need Jesus Christ, that He changes people (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that if we reject Him – and His “free gift” of salvation (Ephesians 2:7-9) – we will one day receive a harsh eternal judgment (hell) (2 Thesselonians 1:6-10). The answer for each of us – homosexual, straight and in between – is found in the atoning sacrifice of the God-man, Jesus Christ, the “one mediator between God and man” (1 Timothy 2:5-6) – who C.S. Lewis described as either a liar, a lunatic, or the Son of God.

That’s all I meant to suggest with my list of sinners: not another condemnation of homosexuals but a picture of mankind’s universal, egalitarian need for Christ, Who endured the Cross of Good Friday to rise again on Resurrection Sunday, so that we, too, could live forever with Him.

In the original King James version, Isaiah 8, verse 12, says ‘a confederacy’, in the New King James, it says ‘conspiracy’. It means conspiracy, treason, see above.

Isaiah 8:11  For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

21  And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
22  And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

There is a conspiracy, a confederacy, those who have cut a covenant to deceive, We find this word in Obadiah 1:7. Today in this land, we have many conspiracies, but the main one is within the church today, people who have sold their desires to the world for their own purposes.

This land called America will not fall because of the economy, not because of oil, or the shortage of it. It will not fall because of war, debt, hatred, violence, or some other nation that invades it. It will fall because it has rejected the LORD of Hosts who ruleth from heaven among the nations. See Psalm 2.
