“FOR MANY ARE CALLED, BUT FEW ARE CHOSEN”
(Matthew 22:14)

the destroyer

the destroyer

Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come.
Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4)

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:24-32)

These verses, and what they say, are not easy to swallow – as Jesus’ followers already remarked back then. They go against what is often and generally preached today, even by so-called Christian preachers and revivalists.

Everyone wants to bring a positive, faith-building message and leave out the more negative passages with their serious warnings. This, at least, is what most preachers would rather do. How different, then, are these words from our Lord and the Apostle Paul, to the generally-accepted mode of preaching of today’s preachers.

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:7-12)

And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.” (Revelation 22:10-11)

As our Lord prayed:

I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. (John 17:9)

Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:23-24)

From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:66-68)

who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. (1 Peter 3:20)

Truly we would do well to hearken in all seriousness to these words. They may be life saving for those who are called to be His followers and disciples. And the way we respond to these biblical injunctions may well determine if we are not just among those who are called, but also among those few who remain faithful and endure to the end; who will be among ‘the chosen ones’ who do prevail. For as Jesus said: even though ‘many are called, only a few are chosen.’

Let us hearken to these words Lord spoke to His church in Ephesus. Notwithstanding that its members had so much positive going for them – more so than among many churches today – Jesus’ words nonetheless imply they might still lose it all, and not be chosen:

‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place–unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.’ (Revelation 2:1-7)

Thus He spoke to the Church in Smyrna:

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” (Revelation 2:10b-11)

And to Thyatira:

“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. But hold fast what you have till I come.” ‘ (Revelation 2:18-25)

And to Sardis:

He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. (Revelation 3:5)

And to Philadelphia:

Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. (Revelation 3:10-11)

And to Laodicea:

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (Revelation 3:19-22)

If we are honest we will have to acknowledge – after reading all these verses – that the holiness and fear of the Lord which permeates from these holy words is so different from the happy clap trap of much of today’s Christian preaching. May these words indeed find a deep place in our hearts and lives and prevent us, by the grace and inspiration of God, from belonging to the MANY who will fall away.

Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. (Isaiah 60:1-3)

So when darkness will increasingly cover the nations of the world, just then, according to this hope-filled prophecy from Isaiah, God’s light and glory will arise over little Israel. Just as God’s light arose over the nations of the world when darkness and destruction came over Israel, now it is to be the other way around.

“Darkness shall cover the earth – yes deep darkness” and we already see it at all sides. Tsunamis, epidemics like AIDS, earthquakes, fires and other disasters, economic turmoil, and these the Messiah said are ONLY the beginning of the sorrows. Wars and rumors of wars – hunger drought and starvation and flooding, violence, rape, looting and destruction in many a city, darkness and despair.

“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26)

David Wilkerson recently also sounded this trumpet:

“For ten years I have been warning about a thousand fires coming to New York City. It will engulf the whole megaplex, including areas of New Jersey and Connecticut. Major cities all across America will experience riots and blazing fires-such as we saw in Watts, Los Angeles, years ago.

There will be riots and fires in cities worldwide. There will be looting-including Times Square, New York City. What we are experiencing now is not a recession, not even a depression. We are under God’s wrath. In Psalm 11 it is written,

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (v. 3).”

This all would seem very gloomy were it not for two wonderfully positive things which the Bible clearly shows us will also happen during these final end-time days.

Yes there will be a great falling away among the believers worldwide, but on the other hand there will be a Holy Ghost revival like none ever seen for those who remain faithful and allow themselves to be purified more and more. It will be the outpouring of the double portion of God’s Spirit, the former and latter rain, that will bring the experience of the Church to what is written in the Acts of the Apostles. It surely will fulfill God’s own prophetic announcement that the glory of His second House will be greater than that of the first.

The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘And in this place I will give peace,’ says the Lord of hosts. (Haggai 2:9)

The second matter that should fill us with hope and excitement is that, in the midst of a collapsing world where the nations increasingly become willing instruments of Satan against the purposes of God, also as they concern Israel, there is going to be an outpouring of God’s Spirit on the whole house of Israel, bringing Israel to the place that God’s prophets have already foretold, as also the Apostle Paul writes to the Romans:

Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? (Romans 11:12, 15)

It will cause all Israel to become truly God’s Spirit-filled people, and many Gentiles will then know that the most blessed and safest place for believers on earth to be in that day will be in the land of Israel, as God already foretold through Zechariah.

‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” ‘ (Zechariah 8:23)

So there is light in the midst of all the darkness for those who believe and persevere as Isaiah prophesies,
